November 25th is the International Day for the Elimination of the Violence Against Women… and my personal story
It happened in France during WW2… I wrote about it in ‘Sisters At War’… and it’s still going on.
Sexual violence against women.
What I never talked about is that it happened to me.
Date rape. Kidnapping.
I wrote about the incident I experienced back in graduate school in a short story recently, but I haven’t posted it. I don’t know when I will. I’m still coming to grips with the raw pain writing the piece evoked in me. I’m amazed how many details came flooding back when my fingers hit the keyboard.
The lost wallet that wasn’t lost, the smell of tequila in the motorcar… me saying ‘no’ several times, but he didn’t stop.
I didn’t lose my head. I suffered through the physical humiliation and I waited…
Waited for the right time to make my escape.
And I took it.
It worked. I found help, called the police, they came, but unless I wanted to press charges… well, you know what happened next. It was back in another era when the phrase ‘date rape’ didn’t exist. I’d be opening myself up to a painful cross examination, everything in my past… you know the drill.
Did I really want to put myself… my family through this?
So I went on with my life.
Until now.
Writing ‘Sisters at War’ and I’m now writing the sequel ‘Sisters of the Resistance’ made me realize that it’s never too late to speak about what happened. It’s helped me. I hope by opening up, my story will help others.
Thank you for listening.

Where is your favorite place to read? Mine is…
… on a park bench in PARIS.
I shall always remember my student days shopping for books in Paris then reading them on a park bench. Quiet moments when I reflected on where my life was going. I loved Paris and its perfume that lingered from the past.
I got a whiff of that perfume and I never looked back…
For #BuyABookDay I’m proud to present my WW2 & Titanic novels to you.

The Orphans of Berlin: 1939 How far would you go to save your daughters?
Yes, The Orphans of Berlin is now available!
I’ve been holding my breath for this moment… a long road… years in the making in a very personal way that made me cry as I write this.
Meet the Landau Sisters barely surviving in Nazi Germany… and Kay Alexander, the amazing debutante from Philadelphia who will stop at nothing to save them from the Nazis in 1939 Berlin…
And of course, there’s a British pilot hero to die for…
PS — in case you’re wondering about the items in the photo — cigarette case engraved with a map of the UK is a vintage piece like the one the hero gives to Kay, my heroine (I use it to keep stamps), and the cigarette holder is a prop I had from a play I did…
The string of pearls I’ve had since I was 16; chocolate pieces because Kay is a candy heiress and a Philadelphia deb — she was Debutante of the Year 1934. The photo is similar to what you’d see on the society pages in the 1930s announcing Kay’s ‘coming out’.
Any questions about The Orphans of Berlin? Be happy to answer them, so fire away!
