Day 17 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train: My Radio Drama Show

The Magic Christmas Train Prologue from Jina Bacarr on Vimeo.

I’m halfway through my Kindle Scout campaign for “The Magic Christmas Train ” and I’m going full speed . . . with videos!

This one breaks all the rules.

It’s over 5 minutes in length.

There’s very little action re: lots of changing scenes.

It’s two characters and I play both parts (I work cheap).

But it was fun making it.

I took the entire prologue and broke it down to just dialogue. I guess you could call it Audio Lite. It’s also a good way to test your dialogue, make sure your characters are talking “to each other” and not “at each other.”

So come back with me to the days of yesteryear to 1943 and meet The Arden Sisters!

And if you’d like to read the Prologue in its entirety and see what I left out, check out my Kindle Scout page:

On a cold December day in 1955, I got on a train to go back home for Christmas.

This is the story of what happened when I got off that train.

In 1943.

An old letter written after the war on army stationery brought me here. A chance to save the life of the man I loved. We were going to be married, but he was called up for active duty and was killed. The letter details why the mission went wrong. If I warn him back in this time, can I save his life?

Or will fate have a bigger surprise in store for me?

Kindle Scout is where you choose which books are published!

If the book(s) you nominate are chosen for publication, then you receive a FREE advance copy from Amazon.

Check out my Kindle Scout book “The Magic Christmas Train.” It’s a holiday Time Travel romance:

Imagine if you could go back to a special Christmas, see family and friends you miss, and change the course of your life . . . and save the man you love from being killed overseas during World War 2.

So hop aboard the Magic Christmas Train and meet the Arden Family doing their best to support the troops during that Christmas of 1943.

Thank you!!

Jina

PS – if you ever wanted to go home again . . . this is the story for you. A hot, sexy hero, a time traveling heroine who tries to save him, and the magic of a small town Christmas . . . and plenty of good food!

Day 16 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train and Ma’s Chicken Noodle Soup

Cool autumn days . . . and chicken soup.

And me.

Yesterday I fussed around all day because the inevitable happened. My Kindle Scout book, The Magic Christmas Train, wasn’t Hot, so I needed to lose myself in comfort food.

Chicken soup. Homemade. With fresh, chewy noodles made from scratch.

I’m a dreamer, aren’t I?

I got the chicken soup . . . okay, not homemade but if fresh from the market counts, then yes. And I added packaged noodles . . . no time to make from scratch AND my book got Hot again thanks to you guys. I put out a call on social media and so many of you responded, I hit the No. 2 spot for a while.

It’s nerve wracking watching your book pop around on the Hot list, but it’s part of the process in the Kindle Scout program and I have to admit there’s nothing more fun (except chocolate) when your book does hit the Hot & Trending List.

Which reminds me of what Ma in The Magic Christmas Train would say about all this to my heroine, Kate: “The joy of cooking isn’t just in the eating, Kate, but the love that goes into the making.” I can see Ma now with her hands covered with flour making her homemade noodles, her eyes twinkling as she formed the long, wiggly dough into noodles and then dropped them into the hot, boiling chicken soup until they get plump and filled with the savory broth. Two eggs, a half teaspoon of salt, flour, and a lot of love.

Oh, my . . . I’m off for more soup!

Thank goodness for mothers like Ma in my story, The Magic Christmas Train. She’s always there for Kate and Lucy and it’s her healing strength that gets her daughters through the war.  She shows up when the girls least expect it, and puts herself on the line with Pop to keep Kate safe. Meet Ma and Kate and Lucy in The Magic Christmas Train.

Day 15 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train — What is a Victory Girl?

Today I want to talk about a subject often avoided when discussing World War II.

Victory Girls.

According to a story I read in a magazine from 1943, these were young women and sometimes teens who got caught up in the excitement of the war and were looking for thrills.

With the dashing, young servicemen going off to war.

Too often they got in over their heads and ended up trading sexual favors from very sweet to “going all the way” for a movie date or soda and ice cream if they could find it. Everybody had a job back then and too often young girls thought it was their “patriotic duty” to kiss the boys and . . . well, let’s say, they grew up too fast. They had no friends on social media to compare notes with, especially girls in small towns who had little contact with the world except what they saw in the pictures. And that world was glamorous and filled with style. So it was no wonder, young women got caught up in the romance.

And here’s the fun part . . . if you nominate my book and it’s selected for publication by Kindle Press, then you get a FREE advance copy!

The train plays a major part in my story when Kate Arden time travels back to 1943 in my Kindle Scout book “The Magic Christmas Train.

It’s HOT and Trending as I write this, part of the process to be selected for publication by Kindle Press.

Day 14 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train is a Philly gourmand’s delight

There’s nothing that says home more than the smells of good cooking.

I miss the smells of my Philly childhood.

Deviled clams on the shell, hot and crispy out of the fryer.

Spicy tomato pies dripping with cheese. Pizza.

Soft pretzels all gooey and salty.

Food plays a big part in my Kindle Scout book “The Magic Christmas Train. My heroine, Kate Arden, is a food editor at a NYC publishing magazine, but she grew up in the Pennsylvania Dutch country and knows her knödel. Dumplings.

I loved the idea of Kate writing about food since it reminded me of the time I lived in Italy and my job was to rate the restaurants and set up tasting tours and dinners, planning the menu, etc.

I found it a challenge to write about food during World War II with rationing. Sugar, meat, chocolate. Kate gets her cooking skills from Ma. Ah, what can I say about this wonderful woman? She’s the rock in my story. Her food and her wisdom keep the family intact. Her Victory Apple Pie got them through the war. “Angel of the frying pan,” Kate calls her and I can find no better description.

So hop aboard The Magic Christmas Train and enjoy a real gourmet treat!

Day 13 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train is on the radar . . . it’s HOT

I love this photo of the radio operators during World War II.

What if they saw something different on their radar when they were watching the skies?

Like . . . a train?

Traveling through time . . .

I got the idea to send Kate Arden, my heroine, back through time on a train when I was reminiscing about train travel and how the scenery sometimes blurs outside your passenger window.

What if the train went so fast . . . or seemed to in her mind . . . that it transports her back in time?

Especially after she reads an old letter on army stationery from a buddy of her lost love who tells her he was on a secret mission . . .

Get the whole scoop on what happened to her love, Jeff . . . and here’s the fun part . . . if you nominate my book and it’s selected for publication by Kindle Press, then you get a FREE advance copy!

Day 12 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train new VIDEO

When was the last time you took a long train trip?

I love trains. I remember my first trip on a train in a sleeper compartment with an upper and lower berth and its own bathroom. I was just a kid in pigtails and pleaded with my mom for the upper berth.

Then there was the time I grabbed an upper berth on a train from Nuremberg to Zurich. When we crossed the border in the middle of the night and the conductor whipped open the curtain and said, “Passport, bitte,” I froze. I felt like I was in an old WWII movie.

Did you know the U.S. government moved two million men a month by train during the war?

The trains during the war were crowded, smoky, stopped in a lot of small towns, and were filled with servicemen on their way to camp, overseas, or home on furlough.

The train plays a major part in my story when Kate Arden time travels back to 1943 in my Kindle Scout book “The Magic Christmas Train.

Day 11 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train is HOT

Did you know coffee was rationed during World War II?

Along with sugar, pork, butter, even rubber. You couldn’t buy new tires or drive over 35 mph.

And if it rained and you needed galoshes, you had to buy synthetic ones not made from rubber.

That’s the world Kate Arden time travels back to in 1943 in my Kindle Scout book “The Magic Christmas Train.

The Magic Christmas Train from Jina Bacarr on Vimeo.

Ever since I could hold a microphone, I haven’t stopped telling stories. I used to record fairy tales on an old tape recorder when I was a kid . . . then later I went on to radio doing live commercials, news, voiceovers, interviews, talk radio, etc.

I love to tell stories and add pictures and music.

Which is why I couldn’t resist putting together this 2:00 video about my Kindle Scout book “The Magic Christmas Tree.” Imagine if you could go back to a special Christmas, see family and friends you miss, and change the course of your life . . . and save the man you love from being killed overseas during World War II.

How I turned my World War 2 story from black and white into color: The Magic Christmas Train

I love words . . . how you can shape emotions, action, romance.

But I also love pictures. So when I talk about my Kindle Scout book, The Magic Christmas Tree, I wanted to use photos that evoke the wartime year of 1943.

We always think of World War 2 in terms of black and white photos. But I want to bring the reader back into that time as if you are there. Like Dorothy opening the door to Oz – everything changes from black and white to color.

To do that, I bought some fabulous RF photos from Dreamstime.com from the Everett collection from the 1940s. In the same way, I want to make the story come alive with colorful words, I’ve been colorizing these photos to put you back there in 1943.

Not easy.

I’ve done a few so far, colorizing everything in the photo, even the eye color. The lipstick is fun since it was holiday red back then. The artist in me enjoys choosing the colors I think work best and then applying them.

It’s like writing . . . choosing the right words to evoke the emotion you’re looking for.

To show you the difference between b & w and color, I’ve put together this example. In my mind, this is my heroine, Kate Arden, Christmas shopping back in 1943 (she travels back in time from 1955 to save her fiancé who is killed overseas in 1944.)
