Smart Girls Grow Up . . . International Women’s Day

Women in every era have struggled for equality.

Especially during the Civil War when women bound their breasts and cut their hair and fought as men in both the Union and Confederate Armies.

Like my heroine.

In Love Me Forever.

As you can see in the excerpt below from LOVE ME FOREVER

Flynt grabbed the young officer and a flash of heat shot through him, a sensation so unexpected it shook his senses to the core.

My God, what’s this?

A woman’s breasts?

He drew back, puzzled then disturbed. Warm nights . . . silken sheets . . . perfume.

He couldn’t speak. He was dumbfounded, his entire being shaken. He couldn’t move and he could barely breathe. He struggled to keep from blurting out his discovery.

The Rebel prisoner was a female.

Would his nurse give her away? Or was she waiting for him to say something? He couldn’t. He felt a stirring within him, something he didn’t want to admit, that brought a hardness between his loins. Did he dare imagine that a beautiful woman existed under all that blood and dirt? He’d heard stories about women enlisting in the army, both North and South, and fighting as men. A good set of teeth to rip open a bullet cartridge, a trigger finger that worked, and a firm handshake was all that was required to join up. It was no secret the promise of a steady paycheck was often the reason behind such reckless female behavior.

That didn’t solve his immediate problem.

Flynt couldn’t see her face under the broad-brimmed hat, but the fullness of her breasts was quite evident when she fell against him. She was tall, making her charade as a man believable, with a leanness about her uncommon to most women he knew. Too often they bound their bodies with boned corsets and rounded hip pads.

He released her, though not willingly. Her lean figure added to her appeal. She was strong and lithe, like the mountain cats he’d hunted west of the Mississippi, but she was no country girl. Her manner of speaking, though strange to his ears, told him she was well educated.

An adventuress? Or was she a female physician? That would explain her disguise since women in the medical field were rare.

Her presence put him off balance, but he couldn’t stop a smile from curving over his lips.

Who is she? he wanted to know.

More important, what was he going to do with her?

PS — I  haven’t been posting for a while due to my computer crashing, then a second computer freezing up!

Oh, it’s been a bumpy ride, but I’m making it. Got the first computer back with most of my stuff (I use an external backup which saved me).

In the middle of all this, I’ve been working on a new project I’m so excited about. I won’t know for a while if my story will be accepted, but I’ll keep you posted!

The Magic Christmas Train has left the station . . .

Today I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who nominated my Kindle Scout book, The Magic Christmas Train, and who tweeted and shared the link.

My book is in review right now . . .

I’ll be updating this page as soon as I have word!!

Again, thank you!!

=======

My heroine Kate in The Magic Christmas Train receives a letter years after the war from an army buddy of her fiance, who was killed overseas in the European theater. It’s that letter that sets into motion her trip back through time from 1955 to 1943:

On a cold December day in 1955, I got on a train to go back home for Christmas.

This is the story of what happened when I got off that train.

In 1943.

An old letter written after the war on army stationery brought me here. A chance to save the life of the man I loved. We were going to be married, but he was called up for active duty and was killed. The letter details why the mission went wrong. If I warn him back in this time, can I save his life?

Day 30 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train and LAST DAY to nominate my story

Last day for my Kindle Scout campaign for The Magic Christmas Train and what a journey it’s been.

Christmas on the home front during WW II was so different than what we know today. There were few if any live Christmas trees because of no manpower to cut them down; no new ornaments imported, and wrapping presents was discouraged because the government needed the paper.

Rubber anything was impossible to get–from tires to girdles. Sweets for the holidays were harder to make with sugar rationing. No outdoor Christmas lights.

But as it was so often said during the war, the light came from within the souls of the good people who never wavered in their support for the men and women who served in the Armed Forces.

I tried to show that spirit in my WW II time travel romance, The Magic Christmas Train, through the eyes of the folks in my little town of Posey Creek, Pennsylvania.

That Christmas season was a very special one for my heroine, Kate Arden. Like so many women, she lost her man in the fighting overseas.

But she never stopped loving him. And somehow, years later, she travels back to 1943 on a magic train to save him.

For the light in her heart for this special man never went out. Maybe that was the magic that made her journey back through time possible.

==========

It all starts when Kate receives a letter years after the war from an army buddy of her fiancé who was killed overseas in the European theater. It’s that letter that sets into motion her trip back through time from 1955 to 1943:

Day 29 Kindle Scout Campaign: The Magic Christmas Train and going back in time to meet the Troop Trains

Is your trip necessary?

Read the familiar poster hung inside the rail car during WW II. Civilians were encouraged not to ride the trains so servicemen and women heading to camp and overseas or going home on furlough could find a seat aboard the crowded trains.

The government moved more than 2 million men a month on trains.

The men got hungry, bored, restless, and missed home.

So the ladies of many small towns like Posey Creek,  Pennsylvania would meet the trains on their ten-minute stops so the locomotive could take on water. They served up cookies and coffee, newspapers, even razors to the men aboard the trains.

My heroine, Kate Arden, gets on the train in 1955, but when she gets off, she’s in 1943.

What happens to Kate is a chance to go home again . . .

. . . but can she change the future and save the man she loves from being killed in the war?

Find out in The Magic Christmas Train.
