Titanic Tuesdays: Titanic and the Passenger list that never was…

meet the Irish girl who ran away to save her life

I never miss the NBC show, Manifesta suspenseful drama about a plane that goes missing then miraculously lands with passengers and crew alive after five years.

Who was on the plane? The passengers list and the stories of those on board unfold over the first two seasons. And that’s the key. We know who was on that plane.

But the Titanic?

Well, not exactly…

No one really knows how many passengers sailed on the maiden voyage of the Titanic on April 10, 1912.

Modern historians have settled on the number 2,228 passengers, though no complete passenger list exists.

What is known are the passenger names recorded on thirty-four handwritten pages from 1912 currently stored at the National Archives in London.

A rare second class passenger list was sold at auction a few years for $33,900 (Christie’s auctioned off a first class passenger list in a booklet in 1998), but no one really know for sure who was on that ship.

Fascinating fodder for a love story… so many what ifs come to mind.

What if your heroine was traveling under an alias?

Not unusual for passengers at that time to travel under an assumed name. Like Lady Duff-Gordon and her husband traveling as the ‘Morgans’ to allegedly avoid the press; or a Frenchman who kidnapped his two children and listed himself as a Mr. ‘Hoffman.’ We can’t forget the gambler, George Brereton, who traveled first class under the alias ‘George Brayton.’

We know the Titanic wasn’t filled to capacity (the ship could hold 3,547 passengers and crew).

And since no official passenger list will ever be completely accurate, it was exciting for me to create a heroine named Ava O’Reilly because she could have been on the Titanic.

And no one would have ever known.

Until now.

You’ll meet Ava O’Reilly in The Runaway Girl, A love story on the Titanic.

Titanic Tuesdays: Titanic and Teddy Bears

Meet the famous teddy bear from the Titanic…

Teddy Bears, Polar Bears and Titanic, oh my.

What do teddy bears have in common with the Titanic? Let’s start with polar bears.

And a little boy who was a passenger on the Titanic.

In my novel, The Runaway Girl, my hero, Captain Lord James ‘Buck’ Blackthorn, is watching Irish girl, Ava O’Reilly, from the Promenade deck arriving on the tender, Ireland, to board the Titanic.

He’s fascinated when he sees her save the travel bag of a Jesuit novitiate from going overboard when the man of the cloth slips on the wet wooden slats and drops his bag.

Risking her own safety, Ava races after it and grabs the bag before it goes overboard.

What Ava didn’t know was that bag contained the last photos of the Titanic taken by Father Browne. One of those photos showed a picture of a little boy playing on deck. He loved playing with his polar bear.

The boy survived the Titanic, but unfortunately three years later he was killed in an auto accident. In 1913 his mother wrote a story about the boy’s favorite polar bear’s adventures, but after the tragedy it was put away and forgotten.

Until years later in 1982.

The book was published in 1994 as ‘Polar: The Titanic Bear.’

But that’s not the end of our bear story.

Teddy bears are as beloved to children as lollipops and spinning tops. They’re a comfort to a child and a fond memory long after a child grows up. In many an attic you’ll find dusty teddy bears just waiting for a child’s loving arms to hold them.

They warm the heart and comfort the soul.

Especially those who lost a loved one on the Titanic.

After the Titanic sinking in 1912, the Steiff Company in Germany manufactured six hundred black mohair teddy bears in five different sizes.

The ‘mourning bears,’ as they were called, were commissioned as a sign of respect and were sold at Harrods in London to comfort many a widow or family member who lost someone on the Titanic.

I’m sure many heartfelt prayers were said while holding one of these teddy bears.

As my heroine Ava O’Reilly says before reciting a prayer: ‘…knowing it don’t matter to Him what words a body said, only that they were true and pure.’

Titanic Tuesdays: Titanic and the Loo and a lord in a tub

Captain Lord Blackthorn, a lord in a tub

A funny thing happened to my heroine, Ava O’Reilly, on the way to the loo when she boarded the ship of dreams. She gets a peek at first class accommodations when she runs into the dashing gentleman gambler, Captain Lord James ‘Buck’ Blackthorn.

She can’t believe his private bathroom with its double sink and commode.

Ava also discovers Titanic’s first class passengers enjoyed such luxuries as an electric heater in their bathroom, linoleum tiles, and pure Vinolia Otto toilet soap smelling of lemon and spice.

The captain of the ship enjoyed his bath with a choice of fresh or seawater, hot or cold.

First class ladies could spend ‘female only’ time at the luxuriously appointed Turkish Baths every day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The baths provided pampering such as early tanning beds called ‘electric baths.’ There was also a drinking fountain. I imagine the ladies enjoyed their privacy since there was a weighing chair in the cooling room which recorded their weight and the date so they could see if they ‘sweat’ off any pounds in the baths.

Second class cabins had problems with the faucets not functioning.

Third class or steerage had plenty of lavatories, but they didn’t wash much if the number of tubs on board is any indication.

‘I hear there are only two tubs in steerage for seven hundred passengers,’ Captain Lord Blackthorn tells her.

Ava can’t believe her ears. ‘Two tubs for all them people?’

‘Rather cozy, if you ask me.’

Captain Lord Blackthorn is quite a rogue, but he’s met his match in Ava. He soon discovers she’s quite a handful and challenges him at every turn…

Can this plucky Irish lass win the heart of a titled British gentleman?

The Titanic was called ‘the ship of dreams.’

Or is it just a shipboard romance he’s after? He’s used to a life of privilege and entertaining the most beautiful aristocratic ladies… yet he can’t forget the beautiful red-headed Irish girl.

Wealth comes with its own set of rules aboard the Titanic and the first class passengers play it for all it’s worth…will Captain Lord Blackthorn see that his world is coming to an end before it’s too late?

Before he loses Ava?

A Naughty Christmas Carol” How I turned Scrooge into a Sexy Alpha Male #ChristmasEve

I’ve always loved the Dickens’ classic about Scrooge and his scratchy quill pen.

But what if Scrooge worked on Wall Street and used a smart phone instead?

Sounds good, I thought, and set my fingers to tapping on my keyboard. I knew the story by heart, even the dialogue with Scrooge complaining about giving his clerk the day off on Christmas and sending the poor to workhouses.

But we live in a techie world with faxes, GPS, and Twitter. I had to update the story. And don’t forget, I wanted my Scrooge to be a sexy hunk. So I let my imagination run wild.

Here, let me show you:

Imagine you’re rushing around doing last minute Christmas shopping and you run smack into the most gorgeous man you’ve ever seen. He looks you over like he wants to strip off your clothes and bend you over his knee and spank you. Tall, broad shoulders, muscular chest filling out a well-cut $5,000 suit. Silky pin-striped tie, platinum cuff links. His deep blue eyes casting bold glances your way that your mama would never approve of. But you do.

Oh, my.

“Do you work around here?” you ask casually, loving the way he smells when he leans over to see if you’re okay. You nearly faint when you get a whiff of his aristocratic masculine scent. Sweet tobacco, musk. Cinnamon? Who cares? He smells divine.

“I work on Wall street,” he says, smiling.

A banker, nice.

It’s hard to get a taxi this time of day, he says, so he’ll send you home in his limo.

You can’t believe your luck. Is he one of those sexy billionaires you’ve been reading about?

You bet. You’re hooked. A Christmas present in your silk stocking and it’s only Christmas Eve.

He gives you his business card and invites you to have holiday brunch with him in his penthouse.

You’re beside yourself with glee as you rub your thighs together, lovely contractions making you hum a jingly tune.

Then you read his card:
Ebenezer Scrooge.

No, no, no

I hit the Delete button.

It ain’t gonna work.

No matter how handsome, how sexy, how rich, who’s going to fall in love with a guy named Ebenezer? Dickens’ curmudgeon with his ill-fitting suit and stovepipe hat isn’t exactly cover model material. No way would you want him swinging his cane over your butt.

Therein lies the rub: How was I going to make my Scrooge sexy?

And stay true to the Dickens’ classic?

A timeless story of the hero seeing the error of his ways.

That’s what we love about the story, watching him change. I wanted to take that idea a step further and write about an alpha male gone wrong who finds his way home through the love of a beautiful woman.

First, Scrooge needed a new name.

Nick Radnor.

“Nick had a cast iron stomach and tight abs. He was tall, handsome and could wheel and deal with the best of them. Talk on his cell to his bankers with one hand and find his way under the elastic band on his secretary’s black silk panties with the other.”

I had to make the other characters sexy as well. What if his faithful clerk, Mr. Cratchit, was a gorgeous blonde secretary named Jinger?

“Standing in the doorway, the six-foot tall blonde wore red high heels, a black garter belt and black stockings with a red-and-white striped candy cane strapped to her thigh. She wore nothing else but a leather collar around her neck studded with rhinestones and jingle bells.”

I decided my modern Scrooge would also have a beautiful fiancée named Monique:ANaughtyChristmasCarol500_333

“Monique Ashford had the face of an angel and the figure of a model. Came from an old Newport family…Her pink babydoll top barely concealed her full breasts and her tight white panties pinched the crack of her ass…”

Nick frequents Mamie’s, a gentleman’s club in the financial district. Since I write erotic romance, I made it a BDSM club:

“She [Mamie] first strapped on her plastic stilettos and diamond choker back in the Reagan years when she opened up shop in the Silk Stocking district in a swank six-room apartment once owned by a famous madam during the Depression. Business was good and her “private parties” soon began to draw customers from Wall Street…She schooled her girls in the art of the tease as well as how to walk, talk and bend over with grace.”

Marley the Ghost became Nick’s business partner, Charlie Harris, who died in the arms of a beautiful woman at Mamie’s.

A jovial but debauched son of a gun who played the game hard and liked his women rough.”

And we can’t forget the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future: three sexy female spirits with great bods and killer wardrobes. Not to mention magical powers.

Once I had my cast of characters (yes, I have a Tiny Tim character, too), now what?

I wanted to stay true to the Dickens’ classic, so I opened the story on Christmas Eve in Nick’s office. It’s late and Nick is working overtime when Jinger reminds him it’s time for holiday sex. No romance, just sex. And no promotion for Jinger either, Nick says. Not this year.

Nick sounds like a heartless one-percenter, doesn’t he? Just like Scrooge. I had to find out why Nick is so cold-hearted. It goes back to Christmas Eve when he was a kid and his corporate raider father gave him coal in his stocking every year. That’s why Nick hates Christmas.

Now we’re getting somewhere. We also meet Nick as a young man and discover that he wasn’t always a greedy businessman.

He’s cold and heartless now and he’s about to find out where that path is taking him when he convinces Mamie to open up her club for him late on Christmas Eve.

The old gal adores Nick, and not just his generous tips. Mamie sees something in him that no one else does: he’s a lost little boy. She also knows that Nick is still grieving over the sudden death of his business partner last Christmas Eve, Charlie.

When Charlie’s ghost shows up after a night of wild drinking and whipping, we’re off and running. The three ghosts make their appearance just like in the classic story. Three sexy babes who take Nick on a whirlwind tour of his past, present, and future with each episode tied to his beautiful fiancée, Monique.

Monique is the anchor in my story. She never stops believing in her man, no matter what. It is through her eyes that we fall in love with Nick, all the while hoping that he wakes up before it’s too late and he loses everything.

Including her.

“A Naughty Christmas Carol” was a blast for me to write. And yes, it has a happy ending. It’s an erotic and sexy 50 Shades of Grey Scrooge with three sexy female ghosts trying to save the soul of a Wall Street trader on this naughty Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas, everyone!

LOVE ME FOREVER

She wore gray.
He wore blue.
But their love defied the boundaries of war.
And time.

I dreamed I met a sexy doctor…back in 1862

To sleep…perchance to–

Time travel?

Liberty Jordan thinks she dreaming when a strange Civil War artifact blasts her back to 1862 and she finds herself swapping medical knowledge with a handsome and oh so sexy medical officer in the Union Army.

Major Flynt Stephens.

The only problem is: she’s disguised as a Confederate officer…and she’s a prisoner of war.

=============

“Isn’t it also your duty, Major, to prevent illness?” she said wryly.

“Yes—”

“Then why are more than half your prisoners lice and tick ridden? Their clothes ill fitting and torn. No decent food or blankets, not to mention threats from sadistic Union officers.”

The girl had spunk, but the waver in her voice surprised him. No doubt she was referring to the sergeant in charge. God help her if the man found the curve of her breasts unbound beneath her officer’s jacket, tempting him. He couldn’t bear the thought of the sergeant forcing himself upon her on a hard cot of cold earth. He preferred to imagine her warm in his bunk.

“This is war, Lieutenant,” Flynt said, trying to ignore the softness in her eyes and the unmistakable feminine scent the stink of battle couldn’t hide. “Not a Sunday picnic.”

“A war that will take thousands of lives before it’s over,” she said. “Brother against brother. Father against son. Many will die in Yankee prisons because of the inhumane torture they suffer there.” She banged her fist on the desk, surprising him. “You must do something to help these men, Major Stephens. Give them blankets and better food. Medicine. Treat them as human beings, not animals.”

“You speak more like a politician than a soldier,” Flynt said, puzzled. How well she mirrored his own thoughts. He’d attempted to influence sanitation conditions in the prison camp, but the military commission rebuked his efforts. He didn’t need this female reminding him. “Who are you, Lieutenant?”

NAKED SUSHI

Excerpt 6

Pressed up against the copy machine, I began to have my doubts. I couldn’t move as surely as if I were tied down, my legs spread wide apart, his groin pressed into my mound.

His hands wandered. Oh, boy, did they wander, searching up and down my body, his fingers pulling apart my shirt and letting it flap in the cool  breeze blowing through the overhead  AC vent.

“Oh, yes,” I barely breathed when he broke the kiss and then placed his hands on each side of my waist and squeezed it. I couldn’t stop the shiver that ran through me when he touched my bare skin. I wanted him to go back to eyeing the cute black lace edging of my bra with a front hook.
