My Sexy Saturday 27 A Soldier’s Italian Christmas: Sister Angelina meets her hero

Soldier_Italian_Christmas_snow

The Christmas Season is here with all the shopping and holiday parties but in days gone by, husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons were fighting in Europe.

What was it like for these men so far from home?

In “A Soldier’s Italian Christmas,” somewhere on the road to Rome, it’s December 1943 when Captain Mack O’Casey gets separated from his unit and makes a wrong turn…and meets a beautiful nun, Sister Angelina.

Before we get started with this week’s snippet, here we are at WEEK 27 on:

“A Soldier’s Italian Christmas”

O’Casey Brothers in Arms 1

December 1943
Italy

He is a U.S Army captain, a battle-weary soldier who has lost his faith.
She is a nun, her life dedicated to God.
Together they are going to commit an act the civilized world will not tolerate.
They are about to fall in love.

In this snippet, Sister Angelina agrees to help the captain spy on the Nazis…

==============

I understand, Captain,” she said, grinning. “You have what I believe you Americans call a date.”

What devil in her had possessed her to say such a thing?

She acted like the village girls she’d seen flirting with the Nazi soldiers. Oh, the shame. But she’d been so overjoyed to see the Americans, she couldn’t help herself. Her hand shook so much when she heard the intruders, she’d grabbed Father Tom’s pistol, praying she didn’t have to use it. She’d just returned from restocking their food coffers from the monastery. After the Allies bombed the hillside, the monks had fled, taking what art they could with them and escaping down the steep terrain on mules. Father Tom had stayed behind with his faithful caretaker, Marcello, but the Nazi major commandeered the monastery library for his headquarters, making her mission not only difficult but dangerous.

She hated the Nazi with his harsh yells and whip lashings. Major von Arx wore his National Socialist medals with pride on his trim-fitting uniform. His long legs and short-cropped hair burned like a scarecrow’s made the children cry whenever he rode by the orphanage in his motorcycle sidecar.

That was not the case with the handsome American.

Angelina touched the medal with the cross around her neck and kissed it, giving thanks. She couldn’t believe her prayers had been answered, but did the Lord have to send such a gorgeous man? Bronze skin like an ancient warrior, broad shoulders, square jaw. The amused lift of his dark brow giving him the air of a romantic knight. But it was his eyes that held her in a trance. Clear blue pools swirling with curiosity, but also filled with purpose, always alert. No movement escaped him. Did he see how she looked at him?

Here was a good man, she thought, a strong man. A hero.

Why a Thanksgiving turkey is like buying a pair of shoes

Thanksgiving_turkey_shoes_blog

Buying a Thanksgiving turkey is like buying a pair of shoes…

It has to fit!

In your refrigerator.

Right now I’ve got an 18-pounder cozying up to my OJ and milk ready for tomorrow.

I don’t know about you, but I can already smell the turkey cooking in the oven and it’s only Wednesday. I love turkey with homemade dressing, gravy, and all the yummy trimmings. And who the heck cares about the calories?

Not me. I love each and every one of them.

But the holiday is about more than enjoying a great meal.

It’s also about remembering all those great meals we had many Thanksgivings ago…and being thankful for each and every one of them.

I’ll never forget the Thanksgiving dinner I made for the troops. I was part of U.S. Army Special Services in Italy and we had Army and Air Force where I was stationed on a base near Florence. I swear the entire Southern European Task Force showed up when they found out I was cooking turkeys at the Service Club.

We started out with two turkeys and I ended up requisitioning more supplies for dressing and veggies. I can’t tell you the craziness of that day—and night—running back and forth between my little kitchen in the service club with my big, ole clunker stove and the mess hall (two of my Army guys jumped in and cooked a turkey for me in their big oven along with a giant pot of mashed potatoes); I even got the Officers Club in on the action and they cooked a turkey with their fancy dressing.

We served turkey and dressing, mess hall-style mashed potatoes with bucketloads of gravy and peas to the troops who wandered in from the afternoon till midnight. Every one of the guys came in hungry and left a happy man.

And that was the best Thanksgiving of all.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

A Soldier’s Italian Christmas” is truly a story of the heart.

I lived in Italy and always enjoyed the spirit of Christmas and the Nativity scene…it’s a time when the chocolate flows like wine. The holiday spirit is everywhere…but I’ll never forget when I took a busload of soldiers to Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve in an ancient church in Pisa. We had mugs of hot chocolate and cookies I baked and boy, was it cold! That moment was one of many that inspired my story. I never forgot the spiritual joy of seeing these men (many of them combat veterans) rediscover their faith in that medieval church with its high ceilings and hard wooden pews. A coming home for some, a new beginning for others.

My story is about one such soldier who lost his faith in a different war when the Nazis fought hard to keep the Allies from reaching Rome. Captain Mack O’Casey makes a wrong turn and finds himself in a small bombed-out village where he meets a beautiful young nun, Sister Angelina…their story will break your heart when they realize they’re falling in love but that love can never be…there’s also a mystery (I love archaeology so this is no surprise) about the lost Cross of Saint Cecelia and the brutal Nazi major who will stop at nothing to get it.

But most of all, it’s a love story about two people who come together on this holiest of holidays and how faith helps them overcome their greatest fears. Mack and Sister Angelina take us back to a time when the whole world held its breath as these brave men fought for freedom. And a soldier and a nun dared to fall in love

7 Paragraphs for:

A Soldier’s Italian Christmas (O’Casey Brothers in Arms 1)

In this excerpt, Capt. Mack O’Casey doesn’t know the woman dressed in men’s clothes holding a gun on him is a nun:

He nodded to his sergeant to cover him. His heart pounded in his ears. It never got easy staring the enemy in the eye, but it didn’t do any damn good to stand out here waiting to be picked off like wild turkeys. He kicked the door open and did a clean sweep of the courtyard when a cold chill stopped him.

He froze. Someone had a gun aimed at his back. His instinct never failed.

“Don’t move,” said a low, sultry voice in Italian. “I know how to use this.”

For chrissakes, a female.

“We mean you no harm,” Mack said in English, hoping to gain her confidence. She couldn’t see him in the dark. “We’re Americans, not Germans.”

“American?” Her voice changed. “Oh, thank God,” she said in English.

Mack turned around slowly and saw a young woman holding a gun on him. She bent down and turned up the wick on the lantern sitting on the ground and light flooded the small courtyard. He didn’t breathe until he was certain she wouldn’t shoot him. Dark, beautiful eyes flecked with amber sucked the fatigue right out of him. Flashing with a wildness that surprised him, she never flinched. Looking him over with intense scrutiny, she waved the lantern up and down his body. Over his boots, his uniform, the silver bars on his shoulders, and then his face. Her eyes locked with his, her lips parted. Full lips rendered her face with an exotic aura that held him transfixed. The girl was a beauty. Creamy complexion with a straight nose tipped at a perfect angle, expressive dark brows crossed in thought. She clenched her jaw, but her gaze never wavered. An absolute show of power on her part. It was clear she was relieved to see him, but she didn’t trust him.

NAKED SUSHI

Excerpt 6

Pressed up against the copy machine, I began to have my doubts. I couldn’t move as surely as if I were tied down, my legs spread wide apart, his groin pressed into my mound.

His hands wandered. Oh, boy, did they wander, searching up and down my body, his fingers pulling apart my shirt and letting it flap in the cool  breeze blowing through the overhead  AC vent.

“Oh, yes,” I barely breathed when he broke the kiss and then placed his hands on each side of my waist and squeezed it. I couldn’t stop the shiver that ran through me when he touched my bare skin. I wanted him to go back to eyeing the cute black lace edging of my bra with a front hook.

NAKED SUSHI

Excerpt 5

Oh, Lord, what next?

I did nothing to stop him when he cupped my breasts, wondering how far he’d go. He trailed his fingers along the flimsy black lace edging of my bra.

“Mmm…” he moaned.

Was he enjoying the kiss? Or surprised that a geek like me was into sexy underwear?

Just wait until you see my new French-cut, black satin panties, I wanted tell him. But I was so conscious of his devouring mouth on mine, my entire being trembling with suppressed emotion, I didn’t dare break the lip-lock.

Besides, I wasn’t going to let him get that far.

Was I?
