National Nurses Day…and a sexy doctor, too

Nurses_Day

I couldn’t resist posting this graphic with the adorable nurse and her patients. Reminds me that nursing was a male profession during the Civil War. Women had to be over thirty and plain…and couldn’t work in the hospitals after dark. Male nurses took over the night shift.

Which presents a problem for the time-traveling heroine in my Kindle Scout book, LOVE ME FOREVER, when she–nah, I can’t give it away, but Liberty Jordan soon finds out when she travels back to 1862 that women had a difficult time proving themselves in a man’s world. Female surgeons or doctors serving on the battlefield were completely out of the question. The Union Army refused to recruit women as physicians.

It doesn’t help that Liberty falls for a handsome Union Army surgeon…Major Flynt Stephens. Mmm…me, too.

LOVE ME FOREVER

She wore gray.
He wore blue.
But their love defied the boundaries of war.
And time.

LOVE ME FOREVER is on Amazon Kindle. It’s a saga of love and romance and war. Believe me, I walked every road, fought every battle with my characters, even walked around in a hoop skirt to “get it right.”

This is a book of the heart…any questions? Please ask!!

Thanks for stopping by.

Lemonade Day during the Civil War and how a little girl saved her home…

lemonade_day_novel

Soldiers fought hard battles day in and day out during the Civil War. Tired, weary, thirsty men and women…but what about the folks they encountered when they invaded a town or plantation?

Did they see their father, brother? Husband, wife? Daughter?

Or did they see the enemy…

I don’t rightly know how true it is, but Civil War legend has it that a mighty pretty little gal made lemonade on a hot, sweltering day back in August 1862 and offered it to the soldiers in the advancing Union Army.

Every soldier got a taste of cold, sweet lemonade and a smile…and they went on their way, leaving the plantation untouched.

Making us all hopeful that goodness can triumph…with the help of sweet lemonade and the kindness of a little girl.

Meet Pauletta Sue my secondary heroine — a Belle and a Rebel Spy

Love Me Forever is on sale for 99 cents this week

Passion…desire…lust in the Old South.

“He’s my fiancé,” Pauletta Sue said, fussing with her short, curly hair. “Not yours.”

“You have no right to come back here and fall into his arms,” Liberty tossed back, blowing on her hands to warm them.

Pauletta Sue struck a pose, her indignant green eyes flashing. She had no intention of explaining her actions, and that upset Liberty more than the kiss the belle shared with Flynt. She knew it was wrong to be jealous, but she was in love with the handsome major. To her way of thinking, the woman had no right to him and she told her so.

“Listen, you . . . whoever you are,” Pauletta Sue said, frustrated, “I saved your hide from that Yankee prison and this is how you repay me?”

“You helped me so you could go running around the countryside pretending to be a spy, flirting with every officer who wears pants and calling yourself a patriot.” Liberty sucked in a sharp breath. “Well, I’ve got news for you, Pauletta Sue. No matter what you do, the South will not win the war.”

You leave your old life behind when you’re a time traveler.

Like all those dumb texts you sent…the gossip at work about you and the cute delivery guy. Googling yourself.

And you know what’s going to happen tomorrow…next week, next year. Especially when it’s well documented like the Civil War.

That’s the case for Liberty Jordan, the heroine in my Civil War time travel LOVE ME FOREVER. In this excerpt, she finds herself pondering the events yet to come…while ogling the sexy Union Army surgeon quizzing her:

Liberty sat up straighter, her mind racing. But she had the advantage. As if each fleeting moment gave her the strength to go on. She knew what was going to happen. They didn’t. The war would drag on for three more years. Lincoln was alive and so was Grant, and a young woman named Louisa May Alcott was playing games with her sisters in an attic. And somewhere on a stage, an actor named Booth had no idea his infamous role in history was yet to come.

She could use that information to find her way back to her own time.

Then her mind circled back to the present. She looked into the major’s dark, probing eyes, his passion for medicine fascinating her. His good looks sending a thrill through her.

“I’m still waiting for an answer, Lieutenant.”

“What?” she asked.

“Where did you get that bandage?”

“Like I told you, it came with my uniform.” Liberty sighed, exasperated. He’d never believe the truth.

“You Southerners are full of tricks, but I won’t let that stop me.”

She blinked. Did he know she was a woman? What if he tried to seduce her?

The peculiar thought played with her mind in such a way that both frightened and intrigued her. Took her adventure into a whole new dimension. She didn’t dare take her eyes off him. He deliberately offered her a challenge. Adjusting to life in this time could prove interesting with the handsome major.

Her life, after all, was in his hands.

1862: When the Tooth Fairy went to war to help the soldiers…

The Tooth Fairy took on a new role during the Civil War. She fought long and hard to help the soldiers keep their teeth, not take them. If a soldier had a toothbrush, it was homemade.

Brushes didn’t show up as commercially made until 1885. Most used a “chewing stick” made from a twig from a tree or bush.

Chomping on hardtack didn’t help. Called tooth-dullers by the soldiers, they tried to soften them in coffee, but often cracked a tooth.

No wonder the Tooth Fairy was so into preventive care.

You see, for a man (or woman disguised as a man) to join the army of the North or the South, they needed a good set of teeth.

As you can see in the excerpt below from LOVE ME FOREVER

Flynt grabbed the young officer and a flash of heat shot through him, a sensation so unexpected it shook his senses to the core.

My God, what’s this?

A woman’s breasts?

He drew back, puzzled then disturbed. Warm nights . . . silken sheets . . . perfume.

He couldn’t speak. He was dumbfounded, his entire being shaken. He couldn’t move and he could barely breathe. He struggled to keep from blurting out his discovery.

The Rebel prisoner was a female.

Would his nurse give her away? Or was she waiting for him to say something? He couldn’t. He felt a stirring within him, something he didn’t want to admit, that brought a hardness between his loins. Did he dare imagine that a beautiful woman existed under all that blood and dirt? He’d heard stories about women enlisting in the army, both North and South, and fighting as men. A good set of teeth to rip open a bullet cartridge, a trigger finger that worked, and a firm handshake was all that was required to join up. It was no secret the promise of a steady paycheck was often the reason behind such reckless female behavior.

That didn’t solve his immediate problem.

Flynt couldn’t see her face under the broad-brimmed hat, but the fullness of her breasts was quite evident when she fell against him. She was tall, making her charade as a man believable, with a leanness about her uncommon to most women he knew. Too often they bound their bodies with boned corsets and rounded hip pads.

He released her, though not willingly. Her lean figure added to her appeal. She was strong and lithe, like the mountain cats he’d hunted west of the Mississippi, but she was no country girl. Her manner of speaking, though strange to his ears, told him she was well educated.

An adventuress? Or was she a female physician? That would explain her disguise since women in the medical field were rare.

Her presence put him off balance, but he couldn’t stop a smile from curving over his lips.

Who is she? he wanted to know.

More important, what was he going to do with her?

I love “Pretend to be a Time Traveler Day”

Come along with me on our own time machine back to the Battle of Antietam in 1862

It’s getting to be a habit with me.

Time travel, that is.

First, I went back to Paris 1889 in my erotic romance Naughty Paris.

Then back to 1862 during the Civil War in Love Me Forever. (on sale December 8, 2018 for 99 cents)

And I’ve finished a WW 2 Christmas time travel back to 1943, and just sent off a proposal for a fairy tale time travel romance with a heroine who goes back to 1889 to become Cinderella.

It ain’t easy traveling through time. You leave your old life behind when you’re a time traveler.

Like all those dumb texts you sent…the gossip at work about you and the cute delivery guy. Googling yourself.

Turkey Leftovers and Corsets . . .

LOVE ME FOREVER. It’s been a long journey to bring my Civil War time travel romance to readers. Years of research and writing and rewriting…574 pages.

Here is a fun excerpt to celebrate Thanksgiving Weekend.

When Liberty Jordan travels back to 1862 during the reenactment of Antietam, she falls in love with a handsome Union Army major…she writes to him about a great battle that will take place.

Fredericksburg.

She also can’t resist celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday, which wasn’t declared a national holiday until 1863 by President Lincoln:

I find the eerie quiet echoing through Rosebriar overwhelming, so intense is the notion we may witness a great battle. When I see the sad faces of the servants, I cannot let them despair, so I have undertaken to show them how to celebrate Thanksgiving. A day which I discovered is fixed at a specific date each year at Berkeley House plantation, replete with turkeys & partridges. To make Rosebriar more festive, Bedelia & I added branches of fine spruce to the mantel above the fireplace in the main receiving room, as well as streamers of colorful ribbons and two flags handsomely draped over the mantelpiece. The effect is inspiring when the gas lights are turned on. I believe in my heart the whole nation will embrace this local tradition and celebrate a national day of Thanksgiving before this terrible war is over.

Thank you for all your support and kind words!!
