Titanic Tuesdays: Titanic and Teddy Bears

Meet the famous teddy bear from the Titanic…

Teddy Bears, Polar Bears and Titanic, oh my.

What do teddy bears have in common with the Titanic? Let’s start with polar bears.

And a little boy who was a passenger on the Titanic.

In my novel, The Runaway Girl, my hero, Captain Lord James ‘Buck’ Blackthorn, is watching Irish girl, Ava O’Reilly, from the Promenade deck arriving on the tender, Ireland, to board the Titanic.

He’s fascinated when he sees her save the travel bag of a Jesuit novitiate from going overboard when the man of the cloth slips on the wet wooden slats and drops his bag.

Risking her own safety, Ava races after it and grabs the bag before it goes overboard.

What Ava didn’t know was that bag contained the last photos of the Titanic taken by Father Browne. One of those photos showed a picture of a little boy playing on deck. He loved playing with his polar bear.

The boy survived the Titanic, but unfortunately three years later he was killed in an auto accident. In 1913 his mother wrote a story about the boy’s favorite polar bear’s adventures, but after the tragedy it was put away and forgotten.

Until years later in 1982.

The book was published in 1994 as ‘Polar: The Titanic Bear.’

But that’s not the end of our bear story.

Teddy bears are as beloved to children as lollipops and spinning tops. They’re a comfort to a child and a fond memory long after a child grows up. In many an attic you’ll find dusty teddy bears just waiting for a child’s loving arms to hold them.

They warm the heart and comfort the soul.

Especially those who lost a loved one on the Titanic.

After the Titanic sinking in 1912, the Steiff Company in Germany manufactured six hundred black mohair teddy bears in five different sizes.

The ‘mourning bears,’ as they were called, were commissioned as a sign of respect and were sold at Harrods in London to comfort many a widow or family member who lost someone on the Titanic.

I’m sure many heartfelt prayers were said while holding one of these teddy bears.

As my heroine Ava O’Reilly says before reciting a prayer: ‘…knowing it don’t matter to Him what words a body said, only that they were true and pure.’

Next time on Titanic Tuesdays:  The Titanic passenger list that never was…

THE RUNAWAY GIRL, is on schedule for a March 17 pub date.

Two women hold the keys to his heart. Only one will survive that fateful night…

When Ava O’Reilly is wrongly accused of stealing from the grand house where she is in service she has no option but to flee Ireland. The law is after her, and she has only one chance at escape – the Titanic.

Aboard the ship of dreams, she runs straight into the arms of Captain ‘Buck’ Blackthorn, a dashing gentleman gambler who promises to be her protector. He is intrigued by the Irish beauty and manages to disguise her as the maid of his good friend, the lovely Countess of Marbury. Little does he realise, that the Countess is also in love with him.

As the fateful night when the Titanic hits an iceberg approaches, tragedy strikes further when Ava is separated from Buck, and must make a daring choice that will change her life forever…

A sweeping historical romance set aboard the Titanic, from the author of Christmas Once Again.’

Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work & School Day and don’t forget the mocha latte…

teddy_bear_work_day

Writers write.

Teddy bears cuddle.

Who is in more need of a cuddle than a writer staring at the empty page?

So on Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work & School Day, grab those wonderful teddies and sit them next to your computer. Then watch the words fly onto the page as they whisper into your ear. Helping you write that love scene with more oomph…or googling research for you.

But if your teddy bears are like mine, they don’t work for peanuts.

Nope. It’s got to be double lattes. Pumpkin spice and a salted caramel mocha.

Who am I to argue? I think I’ll join them…delicious.

Happy writing!

Check out my Royals of Monterra Kindle Worlds: ROYAL DARE

When PRD_KindleWorldsrincess Violetta goes off to rehab at the end of Sariah Wilson’s (Royal Date) Kindle Worlds Royals of Monterra, she can’t take her tiara with her.

Princess Violetta is the younger sister of the hero, Prince Nico, in Sariah’s story.

She’s also a meth addict.

When she goes off to rehab in the States (after being tossed out of a posh London rehab), she doesn’t tell anyone she’s a princess.

Though her British accent and her purse collection (who else but a princess would bring all this stuff to rehab? asked a resident) earn her the nickname of “Princess.”‘

Still, it ain’t easy getting clean…even for a princess.

COMING *** November 8, 2016: ROYAL BRIDE — Zoey’s story from ROYAL DARE.***

————-

I first met Princess Violetta in Sariah Wilson’s story, ROYAL DATE.

You can meet see what happened to her afterward in rehab in ROYAL DARE.

I fell in love with the Monterra family, especially Violetta. I call her the “misunderstood princess.” She has everything—looks, money and a title—yet she fell victim to the seductive power of drugs. Why? I wondered. What led her down this path?

I was intrigued to answer that question, but more importantly, I wanted to know what happened to Violetta when she went to rehab. How hard is it for a princess to get clean? And will she find her prince when she does?

I answer this question and more in my Kindle Worlds “The Royals of Monterra” story, ROYAL DARE.

I hope you enjoy it!

If you need a hug…you can count on your Teddy Bear

Twitter is fun…Facebook keeps you connected to friends and family…Instagram lets you share special moments in pictures.

But none of these can give you a hug when you need it.

And God knows, we all could use more hugs in our lives. It’s not easy trying to make it in a digital world, but there’s one thing you can count on to always be there for you.

Your Teddy Bear.

So the next time you need a hug, wrap your arms around your ole teddy bear. Tattered, frazzled, stuffing coming out–it doesn’t matter.

Hug him. Or her.

It just feels good…

~Jina — off to find her ole brown teddy bear.

“Hello?” Talk don’t text to the one you love on #DatingSunday

Dating_Sunday

Ever wonder what the guy you met online sounds like? Is his voice low and sexy? Does he mumble, grumble? Does his voice turn you on?

Chances are you text, text, text until you finally meet.

Next time, pick up the phone and say, “Hello?”

You may be glad you did if he sounds like the hero in my Civil War time travel romance LOVE ME FOREVER

Liberty had to face the truth sometime. She secretly hoped the major would come home to Rosebriar while Pauletta Sue was gone. She pined to see Flynt again, hear his low, sexy voice when he talked about Virginia and his home. See his eyes shine when they saved a soldier’s limb, or watch him standing outside the hospital tent with the late afternoon sun in his eyes, exhaling deeply when the last casualty was brought in. He never stopped, never gave up until the last man was seen. Operating through the night in a tent teeming with insects and the metallic smell of blood. It was mad, crazy, and overwhelmed her senses.

Damn, he overwhelmed her senses. She could think of nothing else these past weeks, praying, hoping she’d see him again.

Sounds like Liberty, the time traveling heroine in my story, would give anything for her smartphone just to hear his voice. The major is a Union Army surgeon in 1862. Btw, I can’t wait for Mercy Street — a Civil War medical drama set in Virgina 1862 just like my Civil War time travel romance, LOVE ME FOREVER.

The show premieres on PBS on January 17th.

Happy Dating!!
