We all love fairy tales — so why not a “Happily Ever After” Museum for #MuseumDay?

I love museums.

I’ve traipsed through the Louvre, hung out at the Franklin Institute in Philly, and faced off with an Egyptian queen up close and personal in Berlin.

History…so precious. It shapes us and our stories.

But what the other history?

The one that exists only in…dare I say it…fairy tales?

Wouldn’t you love to see Cindy’s glass slipper? Her ball gown? See if her pumpkin coach has plush, orange satin cushions?

And:

Sleeping Beauty’s 100-year-old bed

Snow White’s poison apple

The Evil Queen’s Talking Mirror

Rumpelstiltskin’s spinning wheel

Aladdin’s magic lamp

What fairy tale historical items would you like to see in “The Happily After Museum?”

I’d love to hear your ideas for our “Happily Ever After Museum!”

My latest princess story is no fairy tale:

It ain’t easy getting clean, even for a Princess…

Find out how Violetta copes on her road to sobriety in ROYAL DARE.

And as always, thank you to Sariah Wilson for creating this wonderful character in ROYAL DATE.

I fell in love with the Monterra family, especially Violetta. I call her the “misunderstood princess.” She has everything—looks, money and a title—yet she fell victim to the seductive power of drugs. Why? I wondered. What led her down this path?

I was intrigued tRD_KindleWorldso answer that question, but more importantly, I wanted to know what happened to Violetta when she went to rehab. How hard is it for a princess to get clean? And will she find her prince when she does?

I answer this question and more in my Kindle Worlds “The Royals of Monterra” story, ROYAL DARE.

I hope you enjoy it!

Limerick Day: The Princess and the Dragon

The Princess and the Dragon

There once was a princess so fair
Who was caught in the red dragon’s lair
Her drug of choice was meth
Which could only lead to death
So to rehab she went in Royal Dare.

Asking for help is the hardest thing for an addict. The shame, the embarrassment and potential consequences for admitting addition often steer them away from seeking treatment.

Fortunately for the heroine in my Royals of Monterra Kindle Worlds story “Royal Dare,” Princess Violetta finally gets into rehab with the help of her family.

But it ain’t easy getting clean, even for a Princess…

Find out how Violetta copes on her road to sobriety in ROYAL DARE.

Lemonade Day during the Civil War and how a little girl saved her home…

lemonade_day_novel

Soldiers fought hard battles day in and day out during the Civil War. Tired, weary, thirsty men and women…but what about the folks they encountered when they invaded a town or plantation?

Did they see their father, brother? Husband, wife? Daughter?

Or did they see the enemy…

I don’t rightly know how true it is, but Civil War legend has it that a mighty pretty little gal made lemonade on a hot, sweltering day back in August 1862 and offered it to the soldiers in the advancing Union Army.

Every soldier got a taste of cold, sweet lemonade and a smile…and they went on their way, leaving the plantation untouched.

Making us all hopeful that goodness can triumph…with the help of sweet lemonade and the kindness of a little girl.

The spunky little girl reminds me of my secondary heroine, Pauletta Sue in my story, LOVE ME FOREVER. Check out the video excerpt below featuring the belle!

Hot Java for You on #GreatPoetryReadingDay

hot_java_gold_sexy_couple

Ever since I twirled my first Irish limerick off my tongue as a young lass, I’ve loved to write poems. Funny, sexy, heartwarming, you name it.

So on Great Poetry Reading Day, here’s HOT JAVA.

My ode to coffee.

And how awesome it is the morning after a great night with HIM. The man in your life.

And no, I don’t profess it to be great poetry. But I hope it will put a smile on your face.

HOT JAVA

Java is a girl’s best friend
When you don’t want that special night to end

“Stick around for a cup of Joe,” you say
After a night in bed that blew you away

Then watch his eyes glow with desire
When you put on the coffee and light his fire

Wearing a sexy black teddy, tight and see-through
You ask, “Eggs or cinnamon buns with your brew?”

“I’ll have the buns,” he says, eyeing yours with a smile
You shiver with glee. The coffee can wait for awhile

It’s back to bed with your man for round two
And to coffee you say, a big “Thank you!”

~Jina

Guess what they used for coffee in 1862?

During the Civil War, it wasn’t easy to get supplies, as we see here in LOVE ME FOREVER when my time traveling heroine, Liberty Jordan, finds herself on a Virginia plantation–taking the place of a woman who happens to be her twin…and a Confederate spy:

Liberty  finished her tea, wishing it were coffee, but there were major shortages of salt and coffee. She wasn’t fond of the parched okra seed that replaced coffee, and she had no desire to try the grits-and-rye blend used as a java substitute. The price of salt was high and she’d heard stories of Southern cooks brushing grains of salt off salted pork to reuse it.”

Philly, Row Houses & Pretzels, oh my! #NationalPretzelDay

When I was a kid in Philly, the good Sisters of Charity welcomed the Pretzel Man every day past the iron gate and into the school yard. Oh, the excitement from the little girls in their blue uniforms–including me. I couldn’t wait to bite into the yummy pretzel during lunch recess…thank you, Sisters!

I love Philly pretzels.

They’re long, chewy, and have just the right amount of salt. As you can tell, that fond memory has stayed with me. When I wanted to write about a heroine for my next story in Sariah Wilson’s Kindle Worlds series, The Royals of Monterra, I wanted to take a girl who lives in a row house in Philly.

A girl with a dream to fly on the silks in an aerial ballet, but something is holding her back.

Until she receives a royal command to perform in Monterra.

There she meets a handsome member of the Monterran family who isn’t what he seems…

I’m writing ROYAL MAGIC now…release date in July along with Sariah Wilson’s next novel, ROYAL GAMES. Keep you posted!

What if Romeo and Juliet had cell phones? #TalkLikeShakespeareDay

Jina Bacarr's photo.

I can’t let “Talk like Shakespeare Day” end without a tribute to Romeo and Juliet…a day for all romantics who love the joy of words!

Whither I should dare partake of words like the Bard on “Talk like Shakespeare Day” to regale you, but I shall attempt to drink the wine that maketh words of beauty flow from my lips . . .

Or:

I’ll just spit it out and say:

Happy Shakespeare Day!!

To celebrate, here is a fun graphic I put together with a 21st century twist.

Who knows what would have happened to the two lovers if they’d had cell phones?

Who says girls can’t do math? #NationalPiDay

I’m dyslexic.

I transpose numbers when I write down a phone number.

I do the same when I type. Thank God for Delete on my keyboard.

When I was a kid in ballet school, I got thrown out of the chorus because I always went right instead of left. I worked hard to get a solo gig so I wouldn’t run into anyone when I chasséd across the stage.

Once when I was totally stressed in a department store trying to find someone, I tried to go Up the Down escalator. (I didn’t see it right in my mind.)

I sucked at math.

Until I learned not to panic and worked harder than everybody else. I’m not the greatest, but I can do it.

I love Japan. They read from right to left and back to front (I was at the top of my Japanese language class since right to left is more natural to me).

Yes, it’s a pain, but I’ve learned to find the pot o’ gold in all this. I’m left-handed and I’ve always been artistic. And I love to write. Create stories. Which is why on National Pi Day, I wanted to celebrate the fact that Girls Can Do Math.

Many women totally ace math and I applaud them. Girls need to know we can do anything…if you just don’t give up!!

The heroine in Kindle Worlds story, ROYAL DARE, The Royals of Monterra, Princess Violetta can’t do math either. My heart went out to this princess from Sariah Wilson’s (Royal Date). Princess Violetta is the younger sister of the hero, Prince Nico, in Sariah’s story.

ShRD_KindleWorldse’s also a meth addict.

Addiction is the deepest, darkest hole in the universe…from Royal Dare #EatingDisorderAwarenessWeek Feb 21-27

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week comes to an end today…but many women and girls will continue to struggle with the seesaw ups and downs of obsessing about our weight.

What makes it even more devastating is when you use drugs to stay thin.

Like meth.

Meet the heroine of my Kindle Worlds story, ROYAL DARE, The Royals of Monterra, Princess Violetta.

My heart went out to this princess from Sariah Wilson’s (Royal Date). Princess Violetta is the younger sister of the hero, Prince Nico, in Sariah’s story.

She’s also a meth addict.

When she goes off to rehab in the States (after being tossed out of a posh London rehab), she doesn’t tell anyone she’s a princess.

Though her British accent and her purse collection (who else but a princess would bring all this stuff to rehab? asked a resident) earn her the nickname of “Princess.” Still, it ain’t easy getting clean…even for a princess.

It’s horrible.

Here’s a short excerpt from ROYAL DARE when Violetta is on meth:

I crashed way sooner than I should have. Meth is an emotional drug and my emotions went into overdrive at this new turn of events. Cold knives cut right through me, my body weighed down like I was filled with wet sand. My whole life, my future slipping away, my mother’s eyes darkening again, but this time so deep and black I knew the light in them would be gone forever.

That was when the truth hit me. It was either pull myself up . . . or never come back. Disappear down that hole forever. It was no fantasy pink tea party down there with flying teapots and spun candy. Addiction was the deepest, darkest hole in the universe, so deep even the red dragon’s fiery breath couldn’t light up its depths.

I couldn’t go there. Not again.

I sat and stared at the test booklet for the longest time and then the worst headache I ever had drilled into my brain. I squeezed my eyes shut to block the pain. That made it worse. I could hear the old clock on the wall ticking. Tick-tock. Tick-tock. The Victorian metal hands moving slowly past the curly-q numbers. A strange beast in the world of technology, but comforting somehow. As if time was a living, breathing creature that never failed to find its rhythm and go on. Never stopped, no matter what.

Never gave up.

Princess Violetta didn’t give up. She found the strength to defeat the dragon, but it was the hardest thing she ever had to do in her life. So if you know anyone battling an eating disorder or you are yourself, you’re not alone. Ask for help. Talk to someone. Don’t be afraid to speak up. We’re all in this together. Knowledge, as they say, is power. I’m here if you need to talk…
